Many Canadian retailers take part in a voluntary Scanner Price Accuracy Code, managed by the Retail Council of Canada and endorsed by the Competition Bureau. It is a free consumer protection that many shoppers still overlook.
How the code works
If an item scans at a higher price than the shelf or advertised price:
- Items $10 or under: you receive the item free (first unit only).
- Items over $10: you receive $10 off the correct price (first unit only).
Any other identical items are charged the correct displayed price.
What it covers and what it does not
The code covers scanned UPC, barcode and PLU items. It does not apply to:
- Individually price-ticketed items
- Weighed produce, in most cases
- Certain regulated products
Quebec
Quebec has its own regulated system. The maximum benefit increased to $15 in 2025.
How to use it
- Look for signage near the entrance or checkouts showing the store participates.
- Watch the screen or check your receipt before you leave.
- Politely tell the cashier or customer service: "This scanned higher than the shelf price. Does the scanner code apply?"
